Kitchen Science Lab

Turn your kitchen into a science lab with simple experiments using everyday ingredients. Mix, pour, observe, and learn.

What You'll Need

  • Cooking oil
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Clear glass or jar
  • Salt

Step by Step

  1. 1

Fill a clear glass about 2/3 full with water.

  2. 2

Add a few drops of food coloring and stir gently.

  3. 3

Slowly pour cooking oil on top — watch it float! Ask: why doesn't it mix?

  4. 4

Sprinkle salt on top of the oil layer and watch what happens.

  5. 5

The salt sinks pulling oil blobs down, creating a lava lamp effect!

Why Kids Love This

Introduces scientific concepts like density and solubility in an accessible way. Builds observation and hypothesis skills. Encourages curiosity and asking 'why' questions.
